ICC wants the India-Pakistan series to resume: Pawar

Posted by Ashok in ,

Soon after taking over as president of the International Cricket Council on Thursday, Sharad Pawar declared that he will push for the resumption of Indo-Pak bilateral series.
"Recent Home minister and Foreign secretary's visit to Pakistan is a welcome sign. If India and Pakistan start playing and it influences the bilateral relations of the two countries, and also if both the governments permit, we will be happy to encourage," Pawar told CNN-IBN.

The former Board of Control for Cricket in India president, who is also a serving Union minister in the Indian government, began a two-year term as ICC chief after taking over from David Morgan.
The 69-year-old Pawar expressed hope that the process to improve relations between the two neighbouring countries will help foster cricketing ties too.
"ICC wants India and Pakistan to continue their bilateral series. But ICC had not taken the initiative to stop that. It was because of some unforeseen circumstances that both the countries had decided to stop it. But now that the process to improve relations between the countries is on, it will give some dividends to cricket too," Pawar added.
Cricketing ties between India and Pakistan disconnected after the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack in 2008.
Read the transcript of the interview:
You are becoming ICC president at a time when some say the cricketing world is divided. Cricket Australia is angry that their candidate for vice-presidentship, former Prime Minister John Howard, is not there. Are you worried that you are facing a divided ICC?
I'm not worried because it's a democratic organization. According to ICC constitution, if any four members oppose any proposal, that cannot be passed. That's why we have requested Australia and New Zealand to give a second thought and come out with a new proposal.

Modest Kvitova out to humble Serena

Posted by Ashok in ,

If humility was a sign of a true champion then unseeded Czech Petra Kvitova would be in with a real chance of upsetting the odds and beating Serena Williams in their semi-final showdown on Thursday.
The 20-year-old, who is ranked 62 in the world and had never won a match on grass before these championships, has left a scattering of seeds in her wake to set up her clash with the defending champion.
But can she go all the way and lift the famous Rosewater Dish to rapturous applause on Centre Court?
"No, I don't think so," she said after saving five match points to beat Estonia's Kaia Kanepi in her quarter-final.
"Maybe I can lose to Serena. I don't know what I can say."
After the demise of her sister Venus at the hands of Tsvetana Pironkova in the previous round, Serena is overwhelming favourite to clinch her fourth singles title at the All England Club.
The mercury may have soared during Wimbledon's opening nine days but Serena has barely broken sweat as she has brushed aside her opponents without dropping a set.
She out-grunted and out-muscled Maria Sharapova to avenge her 2004 final defeat and clinically dispatched China's Li Na.
Serena won the opening set in her first three rounds without dropping a game and has pelted down 73 aces on her way to the semi-finals.

Brazil still haunted by Pele's 1970 world beaters

Posted by Ashok in ,

Brazil's 1970 World Cup-winners have a lot to answer for at least as far as the country's subsequent national team coaches are concerned.
The Pele-inspired side played some of the best football the finals have seen on their way to Brazil's third world title, culminating in an irresistible 4-1 win over Italy in the final.
But the fallout has hit coach Mario Zagallo successors. Since then, Brazil have been expected not just to win the World Cup but to do it in style, an often exasperating situation.
Even now, when improved physical preparation and tactics make it almost impossible to repeat the 1970 way of playing, the debate rages on.
Carlos Alberto Parreira, coach of the 1994 team which won the next of Brazil's five titles, was jeered by Brazilian fans in the crowd before the final against Italy because his team had been found guilty of playing without style.
Dunga, the latest incumbent, views the whole discussion as a European plot to stop Brazil claiming a sixth world title.

"Argentina have been the best team"

Posted by Ashok in , ,

Former Holland international Roy Makaay considers Argentina the best team on display in South Africa so far.
Question marks hung over Argentina, or to be more accurate, about the coaching capabilities of Diego Maradona.
Those questions have changed into exclamations as the Albiceleste have dazzled in winning all four matches they've played so far.

Speaking to fifa.com, Makaay said: "The tournament's not really caught fire yet. We've had a couple of terrific games, but quite a few poor ones too. But I think it's beginning to change now we're in the knockout stages, and the games will be increasingly attractive.

World Cup 2010: FIFA Rejects Ghana Appeal Against Andre Ayew Suspension

The influential youngster will have to serve his one-match ban…

By K.N.S Mensah

29-Jun-2010 5:17:00 PMThe FIFA disciplinary committee has thrown out an appeal by the Ghana FA to reverse a one-match ban against key midfielder Andre Ayew.

The youngster was booked for the second time in the World Cup during the match against USA, automatically barring him from featuring in the quarter-final clash against Uruguay on Friday.

Immediately after the match the Ghana FA requested to have referee Viktor Kassai’s decision looked into again and overturned after television replays showed that Ayew did not make any contact with
US striker Josy Altidore.

But the FIFA disciplinary committee pointed out that according to Article 72 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, disciplinary decisions taken by the referee during matches are final.

“However, according to article 77 b) of the FDC, the disciplinary committee is responsible for rectifying obvious errors in the referee’s disciplinary decisions.
